The PhaseForward Approach
Medicine is only one part of the treatment. The medicine creates a unique therapeutic opportunity, while preparation, psychotherapy, and integration help transform that opportunity into meaningful, lasting change.
At PhaseForward, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy is viewed as a collaborative therapeutic process rather than simply a medication treatment. The most meaningful moments rarely occur because of the medicine alone. They emerge through the interaction between the medicine, the therapeutic relationship, thoughtful preparation, and a willingness to engage with whatever arises during and after the experience.
Research and decades of clinical experience have demonstrated that ketamine-assisted psychotherapy can be practiced in many different ways. Some approaches emphasize gradual growth over time, while others facilitate more immersive therapeutic experiences that may create opportunities for profound psychological shifts over a shorter period. Neither approach is inherently better. Each offers unique therapeutic opportunities, and the most effective treatment depends on the individual.
Rather than asking, “Which medication is best?” PhaseForward asks, “What kind of therapeutic experience is most likely to help this person move forward?” That philosophy shapes every aspect of treatment planning. Therapeutic pathways are individualized to each client’s goals, treatment history, readiness, medical considerations, and life circumstances. As treatment progresses, those pathways can evolve, allowing therapy to move between different therapeutic states as needs change.
Ultimately, PhaseForward’s focus is not simply symptom reduction. The goal is to help clients cultivate greater psychological flexibility, deeper self-understanding, stronger relationships, and lives that feel more connected, meaningful, and aligned with their values.
Therapeutic Pathways
Therapeutic Pathway 1: Spravato®-Assisted Psychotherapy
An Interactive Therapeutic State
Spravato-assisted psychotherapy generally facilitates a more interactive therapeutic state. Although ketamine provides a temporary time out from the ordinary, most clients remain engaged enough to actively collaborate with their therapist throughout much of the medicine session. This creates opportunities for emotional processing, nervous system regulation, and active psychotherapeutic work while psychological flexibility is enhanced.

Therapeutic Pathway 2: Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (Journey Clinical)
A More Immersive Therapeutic State
Journey Clinical KAP generally facilitates a more immersive therapeutic state. As attention naturally turns inward, clients may experience symbolic imagery, shifts in perspective, emotional insight, and experiences of meaning that are more difficult to access in ordinary consciousness. Preparation, the medicine session, and integration are intentionally woven together into a unified therapeutic process.
